Masjid History
Jami us Salam Jummah Masjid Batticaloa (JSJM) also known Town Mosque is located in the heart of Batticaloa town.
The mosque was established in 17th century by the south Indian Muslim traders visited from Kilakarai, Thondi, Adirampattinam, Ervadi and Kayalpatnam. In1920 the mosque was developed with building of brick walls around and roofed with the contribution of south Indian traders. Since the time of establishment the mosque has been administered and maintained by the South Indian Muslim Traders who visited Batticaloa for their trade activities. Batticalo town has very lower crowd of Muslim Residents in the town itself. However the Mosque surroundings and majority of the high street businesses are owned by muslims from the suburb areas such as Kattankudy, Eravur and Batticaloa town.
Under the act introduced in 1950 the mosque was registered under Muslim cultural division in 1965, the mosque was redeveloped and named as
Jami us Salam Jummah Masjid.
The mosque has been expanded with more developments in the infrastructure and facilities to cater the space for the increasing visitors due to the location of the mosque in the heart of town. JSJM is also involved in community and religious services along with more spiritual activities. Tharaweeh prayers until late night has started in 1970 with participants from kottamunai, Kattankudy, Puliyanthivu via boards and yet in the practice.
Since 1972 local Muslims started to administer the masjid affairs following the expulsion of the Indian traders as a result of the Indo-Lanka agreement.
The current Administrative board is being selected among the Mahalla Residents and the business individuals who do their trades in the Batticaloa town every year.
